Happiness in the Holidays, Turn It Over

By Coach Louise Rouse

The term turn it over is when we surrender and just trust life, when we shift into appreciation, vs., judgment, when we turn fear into love. Some of the hardest moments in life to turn it over are when we face the passing of a loved one.  Sadness can darken any room.

When our thoughts are filled with light there is no room for darkness.

How to fill our thoughts with light during dark times?  We hand it over, turn it over to a higher source.

The practice of turn it over as a tool for happiness and success has been in the mainstream for years. There are many long-term studies confirming turn it over as an effective tool, because turning it over is the gift of  letting go and allowing a greater power to take care of the situation. This simple act creates a more positive attitude.

A shift from helpless to hope.

A positive attitude enhances our grieving process, success in work, improves health, contributes to more loving relationships, creates higher sense of well-being, and a faster rate of recovery from surgery. All from changing the thoughts we are thinking.

However, while we may acknowledge turn it over has many benefits, it still can be difficult to maintain. All habits take time to break and make. Changing a habit starts though noticing what you are thinking, seeing, saying and hearing. Like the three monkeys you see so often in Bali which represent: see no evil, speak no evil and hear no evil.

Recently I had the great honor to have been selected, to share my inspirational story “Queen Of Joy” along with 40 other extraordinary women in the highly anticipated book, A Juicy, Joyful Life. All the stories are about how 40 women turned it over despite obstacles like anxiety, depression, addiction, abuse, or devastating loss, we 40 women, were able to stand tall in our world and shed light on all those around us. The day the book launched we went to number 1 on Amazon for new releases in self-esteem, and spirituality, and second in happiness.  This is what the power of turn it over, can do.  When I turned it over it opened up my creativity. I used my creative expression of writing as a way to release my pain.

When we practice turn it over, instead of being lost in grief, complaining about what we lack, or getting stuck in past dramas, we give ourselves the chance to see all of life as an opportunity and a blessing.

One might argue that turn it over is blindly optimistic, however, turn it over isn’t a blindly optimistic tool in which the bad things in life are whitewashed or ignored. It is making a conscious choice on what you wish to focus on. Happiness is a choice, even in the darkest shadow. Casting light in the dark comes from an inner commitment of love and trust. Ask yourself what do I focus my attention on?  Light or dark, happy or sad?   Of course pain and injustice exist in this world, but when we focus on the gifts of life, we gain a feeling of well being, and peace. When you look for the gifts you find answers, and treasures.

There are many things to be grateful for: the beautiful snowflakes falling from the sky, the colors in a desert sky, stars at night, friends who listen and really hear, a welcoming smile, chocolate, your pets, children playing, a good book to read, our health, dragonflies. What’s on your list? Think of five right now. Just the mere act of stopping to remember what we like raises our vibration to make us feel better. There is a healing benefit from having an attitude of gratitude. During the holiday stress make a game of finding the hidden blessing in a challenging situation. Or when you feel like complaining, make a gratitude list instead. You may be amazed by how much better you will feel. The more you practice, the more an inner shift begins to occur, and you will be delighted to discover how content, happy and hopeful you are feeling. That sense of fulfillment is from learning to turn it over.

Thank you for being you, may we all be like the three monkeys: see no evil, hear no evil and speak no evil, Coach Louise Rouse
